Sometimes children who are referred for, or are receiving, Speech Therapy services will be recommended for an Occupational Therapy evaluation as well. As the parent or caregiver you might think "what does OT have to do with my child's speech journey?"
Occupational Therapy is often used in tandem with Speech Language Therapy as it helps children become more aware of their bodies and use them to produce sound. An occupational therapist may work on sensory integration, regulation, motor, or visual skills to facilitate speech and language growth. OTs and SLPs work closely together to focus on maximizing functional progress during therapy, with goals to carry over new skills into the home, community or school setting.
